Consultation has concluded

In recent months, Council has resolved to endorse in principle the naming of a number of public facilities in Queanbeyan-Palerang. We are now seeking feedback from the wider community on these proposals.

John Walter Park - section of park at 29a Elmslea Dr Bungendore

Council received a request to acknowledge the tree planting and community efforts of the Late John Michael Walter, by the Bungendore Landcare Group. Mr Walter had been a resident of Bungendore since 1979 and was prominent in planting many trees in the area. It has been asked that his contribution be recognised through the naming of a reserve and installation of a sculpture and plaque.

Mr Walter was an enthusiastic and active member of a group of locals planting trees in Bungendore each winter. He sourced and supplied trees and soon went on to plant a considerable number in the park land along Turallo Creek. He was a founding member of the Bungendore Landcare group frequently attending working bees.

The request is to name the section of park land along Turallo Creek on the west side of Tarago Road, the John Walter Park (see image opposite). Mr Walter was prominent in the tree planting, design, species selection, plant procurement and planting on this reserve.

Freebody Oval cricket pavilion and scoreboard

A request was received from the Queanbeyan District Cricket Club to name facilities at Freebody Oval after prominent former players/club members.

Queanbeyan District Cricket Club has formally requested Council to consider naming the main pavilion and the new scoreboard at Freebody Oval after prominent Club members. The Club proposes that the Pavilion be named the Ian McNamee Pavilion and the new score board be named the Peter Solway Scoreboard.

Details about Ian and Peter's contributions can be downloaded from the document library.

The path around Lake Jerrabomberra be called the Peter Bray Walk

Council proposes to name the popular Lake Jerrabomberra pathway the ‘Peter Bray Walk’. The Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra previously identified the Lake Jerrabomberra pathway as a Rotary Community Project and, together with the late Peter Bray, worked with our Urban Landscapes team to upgrade and beautify it for the benefit of the community.

Cr Bray was first elected to Queanbeyan City Council in 2008 and was subsequently elected to represent the Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan-Palerang communities in 2012 and 2017. He was elected Deputy Mayor for four consecutive one-year terms. During his time on Council, Cr Bray served on numerous committees.

Cr Bray served in the Regular Army for some 40 years, retiring in 1996. In 1995 he was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia. Following his military career, he became increasingly involved in the disability sector at community and State levels. He was CEO of Hartley Lifecare for six years, undertook many formal reviews of not-for-profit organisations and was a community advocate for those with disability. He held the appointments of President Queanbeyan Children’s Special Needs Group Inc. and President Meals on Wheels Queanbeyan Inc.

In 2015 Peter Bray’s service to the community over many decades, was recognised with the NSW Premier’s Award. In May 2019 he was announced the ACT Senior Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his volunteer service to Hartley Lifecare and numerous other community organisations for over 50 years.
