Key points

  • Strategy recommends an increase of car spaces in the CBD – from 402 timed and 781 untimed to 705 timed and 768 untimed spaces
  • Construction of multistorey, smart car parks at the Morisset and Crawford St car parks – providing up to 720 spaces
  • Works staged over 10+ years in line with the CBD transformation strategy
  • Funded from loans, rates and grants
  • Priority given to short-stay, high turnover car parks
  • Long-stay, untimed car parks on perimeter of CBD

The Queanbeyan Car Parking Strategy 2018–2028 sets out a series of principles and opportunities for parking in the city and CBD. These findings broadly align with findings of previous studies including:

  • 2009 CBD Masterplan
  • 2015 Cinema and Car Parking Strategy
  • 2017 QCBD Transformation Strategy

The draft Integrated Transport Strategy will also influence the final thinking on the Car Parking Strategy. The emphasis for the future of parking in the Queanbeyan CBD should be to better utilise existing supply through applying a demand management approach while increasing public transport patronage; and repurpose car parking assets for public domain and commercial purposes, in line with the principles of the 2016 Property Strategy and the 2017 QCBD Transformation Strategy.
