We are seeking the community’s feedback on the Road Names Policy.

There are number of changes recommended which are listed below.

Background

The policy applies to the naming of all new roads within the Queanbeyan-Palerang Local Government Area (LGA).

A register of proposed road names is maintained for the purpose of providing names for roads across the LGA. The policy outlines how the community and property developers can submit names for consideration on the register.

Proposed changes

Clause 6.2 of the revised policy outlines the need for a clearly defined notification process for newly named roads. This will ensure residents are well-informed about road-naming decisions and the steps involved, fostering a more structured and predictable approach.

Clause 6.4.6 emphasises the importance of designating a single, appropriate branch to take the lead in liaising with relevant First Nations’ bodies. Centralising this role will streamline communication, prevent duplication of requests, and support a more respectful and effective engagement process with First Nations communities.

Clause 6.5.1 highlights the value of learning from the proven practices of our counterparts in the ACT. By drawing insights from their established practices, strategies and frameworks, we can refine our approach to road naming, aligning with best practices and delivering more consistent outcomes.

Clause 6.5.1 addresses the policy roadblock that has delayed the approval of First Nations’ road names. Revising this aspect will allow us to finalise pending names while honouring our commitment to recognising First Nations’ heritage.
