Digital Economy, Smart Community Strategy announcement

Published on 12 May 2017

Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Administrator, Mr Tim Overall, today announced the development of a new Digital Economy, Smart Community Strategy.

“The digital revolution is disrupting traditional ways of doing things, and is driving remarkable improvements in economic opportunity, sustainability, local services and community inclusion,” said Mr Overall.

“Queanbeyan-Palerang is a dynamic region that has always embraced positive change and possibility. We are committed to leveraging new technology and smart thinking to deliver real benefits for our community, in jobs, education, innovation, commerce, and liveability.”

The QPRC Digital Economy, Smart Community Strategy will complement and integrate with the current Queanbeyan CBD Masterplan refresh, linking the digital with the physical, and people and place with technology.

The Australian Government recently announced a $50 million Smart Cities and Suburbs Program to accelerate digital transformation across Australia. Applications for this Program close on 30 June 2017.

QPRC will engage with the community and local business over the next 4 weeks to develop this new Strategy.

“We live in a rapidly changing environment with technological advancements happening almost in the blink of an eye,” said Member for Monaro John Barilaro MP.

“It’s important we move forward with emerging technologies and embrace the digital space.

“I encourage all local residents to have their say, get involved and help shape what our community will look like in the future.”

“You can have your say about our digital future both online and at forthcoming community roundtables,” said Mr Overall.

“Free public Wi-Fi, sensors, big data, analytics, mobile apps, smart buildings, and smart municipal services (e.g. for parking and street-lighting) are just some of the digital possibilities before us. I look forward to the community’s feedback, comments and ideas to help imagine and identify the priorities for Queanbeyan-Palerang.”
