Stories are a timeless link to places, people, memories, history, experiences and events. Stories are powerful and serve as the common ground to connect us with each other.
What’s your story? We are working on a series of projects where everyone’s story is important.
Over the coming months, we will have two projects where we want to hear your stories. We want to capture the strength, diversity and history of Queanbeyan-Palerang through stories. Everyone’s contribution is welcome, including yours! First up is the Queanbeyan Portrait Mural Project.
We have been successful with a grant application to deliver a transformational portrait mural in the Queanbeyan CBD and we need your input so that it tells Queanbeyan’s story in an authentic way.
Submit an entry of the face you believe best represents Queanbeyan, together with a story of the person in the photo. Upload your photo and their story via the story board below.
This process of storytelling will tap into the collective distinct persona of Queanbeyan and begin to bring it to life through public art. The successful mural artist will select the subject matter from submitted competition entries and the face will be painted in the style of the mural artist.

Noel Reid OAM
PDG Noel Reid OAM is an original Charter member of the Lions Club of Queanbeyan formed in 1957. Noel is a past District Governor (PDG) and a former Club President. In 2006 Noel was admitted Into the Australian Lions Foundation Hall of Fame Honour Roll in recognition of his exceptional service to the Lions organisation and the community. Noel has also been honoured as a Lions Life Member and with a Melvin Jones Fellowship for his outstanding service to Lions Clubs International. In 2010 Noel was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his outstanding service to the Queanbeyan community. We celebrate Noel’s proud legacy in helping to start the sale of Lions Christmas cakes. Noel worked with the late Ern Smith to introduce the Lions Christmas Cake program to this district back in 1965. The story goes that Ern suggested to his District Governor that Lions should sell Christmas Cakes and it be expanded to a National program. His District Governor told him he was crazy, “This clown of a Cabinet Secretary of mine has suggested we should sell Christmas Cakes!” Nevertheless the idea was formulated, moved, seconded and adopted that Lion Ern Smith be given just one week to formulate a plan to bring his idea into being. Anyway, Ern and Noel rolled up their sleeves and got on with it and the rest, as they say, is history! The first Lions Christmas Cakes sold 13,470 in its first year and is now synonymous with the Lions brand. Annual sales nationally are now around $6.5 million and over $50 million in funds have been raised since sales began. Noel playing a vital role during the 1960s and 1970s in Lions fund raising events to setup new services and amenities for the Queanbeyan community, such as: • An adult scooter race three years running to raise money for a filtration plant for the much needed Queanbeyan Swimming Pool • Winter clothing for the needy • An annual Christmas part of senior citizens • Fund raising to start what became George Forbes House • Fund raising for a shelter for homeless women • Fundraising for an ambulance, and • A kilometre of dollars for purchase of hospital equipment. Noel featured prominently in the Club’s 60th anniversary event in 2017 and in the Club’s hosting of the Lions District Convention in October 2017. In November 2018 Noel joined with fellow Lions legend Peter Stapleton OAM and QPRC Mayor Tim Overall to cut the ribbon to officially open the Lions Community Bookshop. Now in his 95th year, Noel continues his great tradition of service in Lions by being a highly valued and inspirational member of the Lions Club of Queanbeyan. (nomination received via email)

Nick and Pasha Jacysh
I nominate my parents, (Nick and Pasha Jacysh), who were taken to Germany during the war from their homeland at age 17 and 19 to work in Germany often in hash conditions. Migrated to Australia and paid back passage money to the Government. They arrived in Queanbeyan with many other Ukrainians seventy years ago to settle and bring up their young family. Our first home was a wood shed that my father converted into living quarters and paid £1 pound a week this in McKeakny street. They lived there while starting to build our present home in Crawford street. These were hard times with Australians not being nice to both parents and their young daughter Olesia (who was bullied in the street where they lives). This is a story that many new comers were subjected to. My parents were some of the first to take citizenship and my father was reported making a speech at this ceremony. Please note: the manager of the National bank, Queanbeyan , Mr. Leck, loaned Dad out of his own pocket money to place a deposit on a block of land where we still live. Dad sadly passed away, the last of the Ukrainian males but now only six ladies still are with us. We are grateful for their contributions to the Queanbeyan community. Dad helping out Mr. Jack McNamara with Rotary projects around Queanbeyan. Mum started in the local hospital as cleaner then worked her way through to chief cook, under matron Hanna. Erika Simons
Erika Simons originally from Queanbeyan now living her operatic dream in Germany. Daughter of Lloyd and Sonia Simons, local Queanbeyan identies Erika has been a member of the ensemble of Theater Osnabrück since 2014/ 2015, singing the roles of Pamina in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Susanna in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Eliza Doolittle in MY FAIR LADY, Valencienne in DIE LUSTIGE WITWE, Gretchen in WILDSCHÜTZ, Frasquita in CARMEN, Agrippina in Telemann`s GERMANICUS, and the title role in Dostal`s Operetta CLIVIA. Before this, Erika was a member of the prestigious Cologne Opera Studio for two seasons where she had the opportunity to sing in production Earning a German Opera Scholarship in 2011, this enabled her to join the Cologne Opera Studio for their 2012/13 season. During her time at the Sydney Conservatorium, Erika performed Many titled roles. Erika appears regularly as a soloist in a number of gala concerts including the Festival of Beautiful Voices and the Red Cross Galas of the Cologne Opera. As a member of the Australian Schubert Society, Erika often sings recitals and Liederabende in Germany and her home country Australia. Queanbeyan should be proud.

Peter (Butch) Lindbeck
Peter and the Lindbeck family represent the past, present and future of Queanbeyan. Peter runs an iconic 90+ year old family butchery business in Queanbeyan. He has lived in the town all his life, sponsored dozens of Queanbeyan teams and causes, is an active member on numerous community boards, has been community radio's voice of Queanbeyan, is a lovely honest person with integrity, is a great family man (most of his big family all live in Queanbeyan), and is loved by just about all who meet him. I presume the winner doesn't have to be too pretty to be a poster boy/girl? :0) PS His wife Ruth is just as deserving! Vittorio Pulciani
Vittorio epitomizes what the Italian immigrants have given to Queanbeyan, it’s residents and community. Their struggles to assimilate in a new country, with little English, oceans away from their family friends and local community. Born 4 Dec 1945 in a small Italian country village called Pofi. He arrived by ship to Australia on the 16 March 1965 into Sydney where he traveled to Jindabyne March 1966 to work on Snowy Mountain Hydro for 6 years. In January 1971 he moved to Queanbeyan and married Rosa Musolino who herself immigrated from Italy in 1970. They settled in Southbar Road where they started their family. Although working and owning his own business in Canberra, Dom’s Barber Shop, Vittorio has always called Queanbeyan his home, active in the Queanbeyan Italian community, raising 4 children who themselves have settled and grown their own families, living in Queanbeyan Jerrabomberra and Googong with their children, Vittorio and Rosa’s 4 beautiful grandchildren, and a new one on the way
