What is the Monaro Lanes project?

The Monaro Lanes project focuses on the renewal of two key pedestrian laneways: Blacksmiths Lane and No Name Lane. Following the recommendations of the QBN CBD Place Plan, Blacksmiths Lane will be brought to life with cultural theming relating to the City’s historical past, whilst No Name Lane will feature distinctive lighting and an open-air art gallery celebrating Queanbeyan and its people today.

These renewal works will increase pedestrian connection and safety, provide cultural engagement and promote new commercial opportunities.

How is this project being funded?

This project is proudly funded by the NSW Government's Your High Street grant program. The grant of $505,701 will cover specialist project management and curation support alongside the delivery of improvements.

How will the works impact on businesses and customers of Monaro Street and surrounds?

Council has engaged with adjacent property land owners and businesses who have provided feedback and are supportive of the laneway renewal works. The project team will continue to work with key stakeholders in the immediate area to mitigate the impacts of construction. Signage has been displayed at the ends of each laneway to indicate alternative pedestrian routes during the closure.

How long will it take to complete the works?

Landscape works are currently underway (May 2022) and due to be completed by early July 2022.

Is this part of the main street upgrade?

The Monaro Lanes project is separate, but linked, to the upgrade of Monaro Street. Both projects are being overseen by the same team in Council to make sure the proposed work is consistent. The Monaro Lanes project will be completed before the main street upgrade commences in early 2023. Both projects are a part of Renew 2620 which will transform the Queanbeyan CBD over the next decade.
