Draft CBD Transformation Strategy
Consultation has concluded
We are seeking your input in the transformation of the Queanbeyan CBD.
The strategy seeks to refresh and revitalise the Queanbeyan CBD (QCBD). It establishes a strategic framework to harness the plans Council has considered in previous years, and nominates new plans to guide the economic potential of the CBD, to shape the public domain, and establish design elements for the review of the CBD masterplan and development control plan.

Concept Plans
On the right under the documents are concept plans for proposed public domain, residential and commercial development in the CBD to increase employee, pedestrian, residential and commercial density in the Queanbeyan town centre. Any development will be available for the community for public consultation. In the coming months we will also be look for further input from the community on the renewal of the CBD Masterplan.
We have developed a questionnaire which refers to questions throughout the draft strategy document and you can also share any ideas that you have on how to make the CBD a better place.

Showground
I'd like to see the showground moved to the race course as the showground is a wasteland 40-45 weeks of the year. Build residential property on the showground site and this allows residents to walk to the CBD.

More riverside development to encourage tourists to visit.
The new park is great, the addition of shaded areas will make it even better, eliminate the lengthy application process and allow a kiosk to open in the new park, this will encourage families to visit more often. Allow and encourage new and existing cafe owners on Crawford St to open outdoor dining area...without all the unnecessary application fees and charges please! More attractions around the river would also help to bring more people to the City, more people will then encourage new retail to the CBD.

Minimum gauge tourist railway along river front
The development strategy Identifies the need for tourism attractions and the need to provide features in Queanbeyan that provides a distinctive identity. I believe that a narrow gauge [15 inch] tourist railway could be built from QE 2 park along the river front past the suspension bridge and out to Karabar. This would have several potential benefits: 1. It would provide a tourist feature in Queanbeyan that, to my knowledge, would be unique in NSW, if not in Australia. [Such railways are fairly widespread in tourist parks in the UK and parts of the US] 2. It would open up stretches of the river to locals in Queanbeyan, as well as tourists. This river bank is largely unknown to most people in this region. 3. Such a facility could co-exist with cycling and walking trails. 4. The cost of development would be reduced, because the "right of way" already exists and is essentially flat. 5. Such a railway could also be used as a public transport option for locals. Need pedestrian access from Riverside Plaza to Crawford Street
Queanbeyan shopping areas are effectively divided --- you either go to Riverside and nowhere else, or to on-street shopping but not Riverside. It's too difficult to get between the two. To do so, you've got a choice of (i) braving the traffic through the carpark, loading dock & petrol station, (ii) use the Monaro St entrance, but there's no shop for 100m up the street, or (iii) walking through Target and having your bags checked both in and out of Riverside (I always feel like I'm imposing when I've got to walk through but have no intention of buying in the store). It really needs direct access from Riverside to Crawford St, for example through Ali Baba to where the knocked down building is across the laneway from Bells Dry Cleaners. You could then pout extra small shops along the new access way. Look at the best shopping arcades in any town, they all have seamless access to the street-front shops; eg.: Canberra Centre or Cooleman Court if you want to look at Canberra. Such an access would provide a more complete shopping venue, would improve use of Riverside for people parking elsewhere, but also better access to the coffee shops, etc. on Crawford St for anyone who is shopping or working in Riverside.
